Sachin Doshi Recipient of a 2016 BDC Travel Scholarship

Over the summer of 2016, Sachin Doshi conducted a research internship at Harvard Medical School in the department of Radiation Oncology. Sachin was working in Dr. Stuart Calderwood’s lab investigating the role of heat shock proteins (HSP) in both oncology and Alzheimer’s contexts. He was able to apply many skills he learned from the BDC Program and particularly the 3C09 Integrated Laboratory Skills course.  The BDC Program provides an excellent balance of practical and theoretical experience, which creates proficiency in both scientific practice and inquiry. In a research setting, these are both extremely important for obtaining high quality data and analyzing data critically to determine future directions. Sachin will continue working with the Stuart Calderwood Lab remotely, completing data analysis and contributing to multiple scientific publications.

Sachin was awarded the BDC Summer Training Scholarship in April 2016 to pursue his internship at Harvard Medical School. This scholarship provided him with the financial support necessary to make this opportunity possible. Moreover, it allowed Sachin to take advantage of the Harvard, Boston, and Cambridge communities. Through the vast community of scientific professionals, Sachin was able to learn more about research and healthcare, particularly from a technological perspective – an area that he is now interested in pursuing. Sachin was also able to enjoy the summer exploring the city and surrounding areas.

This fall, Sachin will be starting the Medical Doctor Program at the University of Toronto. He is very eager to continue his research career, combining his knowledge from the BDC and MD Programs to pursue pharmaceutical and medical device research. The BDC Program has allowed Sachin to grow both academically and personally, and will play a large role in his research and medical careers.
