AmacaThera

Yonathan analyzes company drug portfolios to identify prospective candidates for partnership with AmacaThera and conducts partnership outreach as well. To assist with partnership meetings, Yonathan conducts literature searches, and compiles the required educational materials for presentation. Yonathan also drafts educational blogs on AmacaThera’s proprietary technology, and on the field of sustained release drug delivery for marketing purposes.

Yonathan’s favourite hobbies are volunteering in hospitals and in underprivileged communities, as well as engaging in ongoing learning through research.

Business Analyst Intern

Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization

Yasamin’s duties encompass a variety of financial, marketing, and outreach tasks in the business development department. These duties include building financial projections and models; participating in client meetings and outreach; as well as designing marketing materials such as websites, posters, and brochures. She also develops strategies to strengthen CPDC’s brand recognition and prepares weekly newsletters for CPDC’s leadership team.

Yasamin’s future career plans include starting her own biotech company to focus on possible areas of female reproductive health, pediatric health, or rare diseases.

In Dawood’s role, he analyzes sales, products, and digital data to build automated reports which provide actionable insights for AstraZeneca. He also measures the execution of business unit performance against key performance indicators, and facilitates the annual quota setting process.

Dawood’s favourite aspects of his internship so far are gaining valuable industry knowledge and relevant technical skills; getting exposure to various departments and teams through cross-functional collaboration; and providing value to the company through data and insights. The entirety of this experience leads to a holistic understanding of the business drivers behind AZ’s mission of making a difference in patients’ lives.

Cosm Medical

Shilpa supports Cosm’s go-to-market strategy in her role by developing care pathway and health economics models. She also strategizes, plans, and executes primary market research through patient interviews to optimize patient demographic maps. Shilpa has used her creativity to design Cosm’s new website and assist with the creation of marketing material.

Shilpa’s favourite part of the role has been the variety of projects to which she can contribute while working for a start-up, such as having the opportunity to get creative with web design and meet with patients to listen to their stories.

Maaha’s main duties relate to creating content for the company’s social media and website. This content includes white papers, which break down complex, scientific jargon into language that is easily understood by prospective clients. She also participates in lead generation and market strategy projects.

Christopher works as a regional intern to assist in the dissemination of information from the global Biosense Webster franchise to the EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa). Within this role, Christopher conducts literature reviews, edits value briefs, and coordinates content from stakeholders for the atrial fibrillation medical devices provided by Biosense Webster.

Christopher’s favourite part of his internship is the cross-functionality that his role provides, allowing him to work regularly with colleagues from around the world on important tasks.

Katrina supports multiple health technology start-ups at The Clinic through various business development activities, such as, market research, reimbursement strategy, and regulatory process mapping. A unique focus of Katrina’s role is on medical device development and commercialization pathways.

Katrina’s future career goal is to work in life science consulting.

As Product Manager, Aaron supports the management of the company’s leading product line. Aaron coordinates with sales, regulatory, engineering, and production departments to grow each product’s performance KPIs, and to build educational campaigns directed at patients and health care professionals. In addition, as a member of the innovation team, Aaron collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, product managers, and consultants, identifying unmet markets and developing a novel product to address said needs.

In his spare time, you can find Aaron doing some laps in the pool or cooking up a storm.

Associate Product Manager

Horizon Therapeutics

In Taneya’s role at Horizon Therapeutics, she supports and develops brand strategies and execution tactics for 3 key rare disease therapeutics in Canada. Taneya also develops conference and sponsorship plans based on team and agency partner needs. She analyzes financial and national data sets to gather insights on market trends and support favourable decision making for Horizon Therapeutics. Taneya’s weekly presentations of patient support statistics to the Canadian GM and Director of Marketing help to determine business plans, and the adoption of novel marketing strategies.

Taneya’s advice for prospective MBDC students is to network, not only to build strategic relationships, but also to gain insights into protentional, previously unknown career directions.

Rachael’s role at MILO includes meeting with inventors to determine patentability; conducting prior art and freedom to operate searches; registering copyrights under CIPO and searching the CIPO trademark database; as well as leading an agreement and royalties database trial.

Rachael’s future career goal is to become a Canadian Registered Patent Agent.

Business Analyst Intern

Emily works closely with her colleagues, including fellow MBDC candidate Yasamin Allahverdi, and under the guidance of her manager at CPDC. Emily supports the various efforts of the Business Development department by conducting market/financial analysis, preparing marketing materials, evaluating potential pipeline products, facilitating client interactions, and building collaborations with external organizations.

Emily’s advice for future MBDC students is, “don’t be so hard on yourself! Take a breather once in a while and give yourself a break.”

Bichoy works cross functionally to deliver omnichannel marketing solutions. He creates digital solutions to track corporate activities, automating workflow processes for Boehringer Ingelheim.

Bichoy’s favourite part of his internship is finding solutions to puzzles and problems every day. His advice to future MBDC students is to not force a networking relationship, but to get out there and talk to people instead. “If you are genuine and honest, it will come through during a conversation”.

In his spare time, you can find Bichoy fixing his 1999 Corolla or skydiving.

Vraj is involved with three major teams within Medical and Scientific Affairs: Women’s Health, Medical Research, and Medical Information. His duties include updating medical slide decks for HCPs, processing emergency special access requests for unapproved products, and remediating medical response PDFs to comply with AODA 2021.

In his spare time, you can find Vraj playing video games.

Ainsley supports the global function of regulatory affairs in CMC quality dossiers, including submissions to Canada, U.S., EU and RoW (Rest of World). Ainsley acts as the submission lead to coordinate with clinical trial coordinators, regulatory leads, and submission managers to meet submission deadlines. She also supports public outreach of the FutureLab (early talent pipeline) to extend the program internally and externally.

Ainsley’s favourite parts of the MBDC program have been the supportive staff and peers, the mentorship program, internship opportunities and the industry connection provided through the internship.

Harry leads the creation and execution of the product and commercial launch of Micellae by analyzing the market landscape and working directly with the COO and CSO on Micellae’s market entry strategy and optimization. Harry’s favourite part of his internship is the ability to work directly with senior management and have a direct impact on company growth.

Harry’s favourite part of the MBDC program is the extremely supportive and helpful staff and the relevant courses offered as part of the curriculum.

AstraZeneca

Reeta designs electronic Case Report Forms (eCRF) for clinical studies at AstraZeneca. She also collaborates with global study teams to create queries and clean databases for data analysis. Additionally, Reeta prepares, reviews, and manages clinical data documents. Her favourite part of her internship so far has been gaining knowledge of clinical trials, oncology research and the exposure to various networking opportunities.

Reeta’s advice for future MBDC students is to be proactive and open-minded when looking for internships.

Ahsan supports Cosm Medical’s clinical research pipeline. He drafts research protocols, manages clinical research sites, and performs clinical trial data analysis.

Ahsan’s favourite part of the internship experience so far has been his work on a patient and clinician portal, developing novel UX designs using wireframe diagrams and excel. He is also involved in biocompatibility studies to ensure they meet the appropriate ISO standards, while working with the FDA and Health Canada to review the regulatory approval process.

Marketing Specialist Intern

Neurescence

Madison’s current focus is on organizing a marketing campaign for Neurescence, which includes developing creative marketing materials such as posters, videos, GIFs, banners, and brochures. She also collaborates with company executives to prepare documentations and materials for external stakeholders and works alongside engineers to help design the product.

In her spare time, you can find Madison composing music and designing.

Clinical Data Management Intern

AstraZeneca

Parisa supports the design and development of electronic data capture forms for clinical trials by collaborating with various members of the core functional team. She also builds RAVE database edit checks, while developing and testing metrics reports to keep site staff updated on the status of queries. Her other duties include: processing incoming data, consistency checking, and the creation data queries.

Parisa’s favourite part of the MBDC program so far has been gaining the skills and confidence to network with individuals and establish a professional network. She also found her MBDC mentor and the MBDC staff to be very kind and supportive.

Parisa’s advice for future MBDC students is, “if there is a specific field or career that you are excited about, don’t be afraid to aim high and work your way up!”.

Dennis performs market research on the US hospital system, and on pressure injury management. Dennis’ research for Rehabtronics includes trends/opportunities, competitive landscape, and reimbursement systems. Dennis also aids with clinical/regulatory tasks in the development of a new medical device product.

Market Research Analyst/Research Co-ordinator

Hirota Lab, McMaster University

Victoria collaborates with research and development teams to identify market problems and solutions, define business models, and identify competitive advantages. Victoria also prepares applications required for fundraising opportunities and conducts market research to help define the product strategy.

Victoria’s favourite part of her internship so far is exploring start-up ventures and having the opportunity to connect with a diverse range of stakeholders.

HaloHealth

Anson screens health tech start-ups for strategic investment from physician angels for HaloHealth. Anson also proposes and executes various strategies for the company, including MD membership recruitment, enhancing KPI tracking methods and onboard/investment processes.

Anson’s favourite part of his internship experience so far has been gaining a holistic view of health tech trends in the Canadian start-up space. His advice to future MBDC students is to “research career opportunities in this undefined, wide industry and network to learn about the paths others took to get to where they are today.”

Marketing Assistant

Dalton Pharma Services

Dana works on marketing efforts at Dalton which include managing the company’s and CEO’s LinkedIn pages, the company website, print marketing, email campaigns, and lead generation efforts to ensure marketing KPIs are met. Additionally, Dana has taken on a Sales Operations role where she generates targets and forecasts for the entire sales team and tracks KPIs monthly to ensure those targets are met.

Dana feels that the best aspect of the MBDC program is “the MBDC faculty who are incredibly supportive and genuinely want to see you succeed. The mentorship program is another great component that further adds to this supportive culture”.

Tameem focuses on analyzing market reports and clinical data to determine the market value for neurology medicines and technologies. His responsibilities also require him to synthesize these findings into presentations and reports, which are shared with Neurescence’s internal and external teams.

Tameem’s favourite part of his internship is working with a great team and having opportunities to work within different areas of the company such as Research and Development. Tameem also enjoys learning a great deal about optics, lasers, and medical devices.

This includes collaborating closely with external vendors and cross-functional teams to manage marketing projects. Sohaib works alongside the sales team to measure monthly business performance KPIs and monitors the budget allocated to the field.

Sohaib’s advice to future students is to “begin developing your experiences and skillset today by involving yourself in a variety of activities. Whether that means volunteering in a lab, working with an early-stage start-up, or having a part-time job; gaining real-world experiences will prove to be extremely valuable. This will help you learn more about your personal career interests, making you a more informed and competitive candidate. For me, working as a Pharmacy Assistant at a retail pharmacy and in business development with a medical device start-up, has uncovered my interest in the customer-focused nature of sales and marketing, leading to my internship today!”
