4th-Year BDC Student Wins First Place at Synapse Life Science Competition
This week, we’re featuring 4th-year BDC student Sohaib Syed for his accomplishment in placing first in the Synapse Life Science Competition in Hamilton last week!
The Synapse Competition is an opportunity for innovators to collaborate with university upper-level undergraduate or graduate students to consult over three months on how to grow their innovation into a viable business. Sohaib, along with a fellow McMaster student, supported innovators Bisep, an organization that invented an assistive device for rehabilitation purposes.
“I worked with Bisep to develop a 15-page Commercialization Plan, which outlined detailed steps needed to bring the innovative medical device to market,” Sohaib explained. This plan included conducting an analysis on the available mobility devices on the market in North America – giving insight into usage on an individual level and interest from healthcare facilities. It also meant that a further look was taken into how Bisep could be reimbursed by public or private insurers to pay for the medical device.
All this hard work paid off! “Upon evaluation of the plans, we were fortunate to be placed in the top 3, from which we then created a poster as well as a 10-minute business pitch,” Sohaib said, which secured them their final spot in first place. Congratulations to Sohaib and the rest of the Bisep team on their big win!
