BDC Student Hugo Yan Participates in Global Research Internship Experience
This week, we’re highlighting the accomplishment of our 3rd-year BDC student, Hugo Yan, who participated in a Summer Research Internship Program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China last summer.
Funded by McMaster University’s Global Experience Award (GEA), Hugo worked for the Med-X Research Institute, a joint research venue that focuses on interdisciplinary studies in medicine and biomedical engineering. In the lab, he worked on studying a novel stem cell transplant method to promote functional recovery from brain tissue damage caused by stroke.
Through his time abroad, Hugo mentions, “this was a perfect opportunity for me to put my interdisciplinary training in engineering and health science into practice… I often reflected on some of my past research experiences back home and thought about areas where I should improve on to become a better scientific researcher.” He also notes how critical intercultural exposure was for his personal growth. He says, “I would often go out and explore Shanghai and the surrounding cities on the weekends with other interns from top institutions around the world… it was always exciting to learn their perspectives. The friendships I built throughout the summer were no doubt the most valuable part of this trip”.
Congratulations to Hugo on receiving this award and for embracing this opportunity to the fullest. We are happy to have your insights from this global experience to share with the BDC community!
